No Money? Here’s how to decorate your home for less

If you want to decorate a house with no money, here are a few decorating ideas for you that are budget-friendly. These decorating hacks can transform your entire house into a more beautiful and well-designed space without you having to spend a lot of money.

Decorate with what you have

How to Decorate a House With No Money

I don’t know about you, but I have a considerable amount of home decor and furniture in my home. My basement is full of discarded items that can be brought back to life to decorate my house. Rather than go out and spend money on new furniture or cheap home decor, the first step to decorate a house with no money is to repurpose what you already have.

Can you move a chair from your living room into your guest bedroom? Can you switch out the art that’s in your kitchen and put it in your office? Do you have an old changing table in the garage that you could repurpose to be a bookshelf?

Walk around your home with a fresh perspective. Look at the art on the walls. Consider the furniture you have in each room. Can you switch things around in order to give your home the feeling of being redecorated without actually spending any money at all?

Use the power of paint to decorate a house

Paint is the most underrated home decorating tool there is. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a room. It can also transform a piece of furniture. If you want to decorate a house with no money, consider asking friends and family if they have discarded paint cans around their house. I know I personally have a few cans of white paint in my basement that the previous owner of my home left here. I also have a few test pots of paint that I used when I was deciding what color to paint my front door a few years ago.

You can even go to a home improvement store and buy something called “oops paint.” This is paint that customers have returned because it wasn’t exactly the color they wanted. Sometimes you can find really nice neutral colors in the oops paint section. These gallons of paint are usually only a few dollars and can go a long way in making your home look and feel fresh. Some flexibility when it comes to the paint color you want can help you to save money on something that will make your house feel refreshed.

If you don’t know where to start, head to Pinterest to search for decorating ideas. Whether you paint one accent wall or decorate your entire house, you can easily update your home with just paint.

Join a buy nothing group

Decorate: 1,000 Design Ideas for Every Room in Your Home

There are organizations called Buy Nothing Groups. You can find out if you have one in your area by checking Facebook. I first learned about a Buy Nothing Group from one of my friends who got her baby stroller completely for free from one of her neighbors. Buy Nothing Groups are hyper-local. In fact, the one for the town I live in got so popular that they had to split it into four groups based on location.

The way it works is if you have something you want to give away to your neighbor, you list it on the Buy Nothing Group. And, if you’re looking for a particular item, you can ask if one of your neighbors has one. I got my TV stand and my coffee table from my Buy Nothing Group, as well as several items for my kids. It’s a great way to decorate your home without spending any money at all. It’s also a good way to get rid of the things you don’t want or to trade a neighbor for an item.

Shop at thrift stores and consignment stores

Shopping at thrift stores is a great way to buy home decor items for less. I can’t tell you how many pieces of furniture, lamps, and other home decor items I’ve purchased from thrift stores. It’s one of my favorite decorating hacks.

Furniture is so marked up in furniture stores, and the quality is simply not as good as it used to be. I love finding solid wood pieces at thrift stores or consignment stores and refinishing them to look brand new.

My husband’s dresser is a solid mid-century piece that I purchased at an estate sale. My own dresser is another solid wood mid-century piece that I found on the side of the road. This type of furniture is the type that lasts generations. And, it’s usually better quality than the very pricey pieces you’ll find on any furniture showroom floor.

If you want to decorate a house with no money, you can always hold a garage sale. Sell what you don’t want in your home. Then, use the money you make in the garage sale to purchase furniture or art from thrift stores. This is an easy way to decorate your house without spending money from your own savings.

If these don’t work here are some ideas :

Minimize your belongings

Sometimes when you are decorating, less is more. If you’re overwhelmed with the current state of your house, the best fix might be to reduce your belongings. Take out an extra-large chair and donate it. Give a box of books to a friend or the thrift store. Let go of souvenirs and clutter that don’t serve you.

Sometimes, when you clean and purge your home, your home transforms into a much more livable space. This is the easiest way to decorate a house with no money. There’s no need to buy anything. Just get rid of the things you no longer want and need. Watch every room in your house become more beautiful.
